A three-year-old daughter of the 2018 Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup winner Eqtidaar, Tenyatta was a maiden in nine runs for previous connections but displayed immediate improvement on her debut in the Deva Racing silks.

Making her first start for upwardly mobile Newmarket trainer James Owen, who is operating at a 20% strike-rate with his Flat runners and trained Burdett Road to win a Gr.2 juvenile hurdle at Cheltenham over the winter.

Tenyatta lined up in a 7f Wolverhampton handicap on the 13th of April under 3lb claimer Aidan Keeley. Despite missing the start a fraction and being forced to race towards the back of the 10-runner field, she came with a swooping late run to get up and win by a length.

Clearly value for more than the winning margin - and having won from the right end of the handicap - there is little doubt that Tenyatta will still be on a good mark when reassessed by the handicapper.

The form of the Wolverhampton race looks strong for the grade, as the third home Profitman was chasing a hat-trick after easy wins at Wolverhampton and Chelmsford. Tenyatta also shapes as though she will stay further, which opens up plenty more options going forwards.

A glance at her pedigree also points to continued improvement. Tenyatta is a half-sister to the two-time winner Agadir Gold and out of a half-sister to the black-type-placed winners Jeanne Girl and Jack Boy. Delve a little deeper into the pedigree and this is the family of Invincible Army, the top-class sprinter and now sire who won the Gr.2 Duke Of York Stakes and was placed at Gr.1 level, the Gr.3 Fred Darling Stakes winner Dandhu, and the Gr.1 Prix Morny heroine Hoh Magic.

With her being bred very well, this means we will get a return as a broodmare at the end of her racing career.

Tenyatta was shrewdly picked by Deva Racing at the Tattersalls March Sale last month, the same auction from which Isle Of Jura emerged last year before going on to win the lucrative Bahrain Triple Crown this winter.

James Owen has already rattled off multiple wins with Deva Racing’s Destinado, Enthused, My Gift To You, and others, in just one year with a public licence, and it will be a surprise if Tenyatta does not add her name to that list in the coming weeks and months.
